Herniated disc l5s1

Hernia discal lumbar
In this article we are going to talk about the Herniated disc l5s1, an injury that we see in our unit frequently.

What is an L5S1 disc herniation?

It is the rupture of the annulus that favors the exit of the nucleus pulposus towards the vertebral canal and that compresses the lumbar roots that form the sciatic nerve. For that reason the leg pain generated by a herniated disc is called sciatica.

Causes

At the bottom a disc can rupture forming a hernia in many ways from a big sneeze or when making a big effort moving a piece of furniture. It is usually the result of abnormal compression in the active part of the disc.

Symptoms

Pain that generally goes from the lower back, buttocks, thighs on the back, calves to those from the feet. In some cases, it can be associated with sensory alterations or loss of strength. In addition to the consequent loss of mobility.

Diagnostic

Treatment

The initial treatment is medical/conservative (analgesic, anti-inflammatory and physiotherapy).

If the evolution is not favourable, surgical treatment is indicated. In this case, the best option is endoscopic surgery.

It is common for patients with sciatica to have started months or years earlier with low-back pain (lumbago). When this lumbar pain is the origin of the disc herniation, the most advisable thing to do is to apply surgery by means of arthroplasty in order to correct both injuries satisfactorily and simultaneously.

There are dramatic cases in which the patient suffers from a large herniated disc and suffers from severe neurological symptoms, such as HORSETAIL SYNDROME. In these patients the way to solve the problem is different. But we will talk about this subject in another article.

Thank you very much for your attention and, if you find yourself in such a situation, do not hesitate to contact our unit, we will be delighted to help you.
